RYA Competent Crew Practical Course
Client: Beginners to Sail Cruising
Dates: August 17-21 ( 1 spot remaining) . August 24-28 (1 spot remaining) + others TBD. Instructor is Roger Harris.
Info: Five day live-aboard.
The RYA Competent Crew is for beginners and those who would like to become active crew members rather than just passengers. Experience living on board and really get to know the boat. Virtually all the course is hands on. You are the crew – without you the sails won’t go up and the boat won’t be steered.
By the end of the course you should be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in all the day to day duties on board. You should also have visited some interesting places and had an enjoyable holiday.
During the course, we cover the following topics:
- Knowledge of sea terms and parts of a boat
- her rigging and sails, sail handling
- fire precautions and fighting
- personal safety equipment
- man overboard
- emergency equipment
- general duties
- manners and customs
- rules of the road
No experience necessary!
On successful completion of your RYA Competent Crew course your name, certificate number and date of issue will be stored for up to 5 years. This information allows us to verify or replace your certificate if required.

“Liked best: practical, hands on, Dave’s knowledge and capabilities. Loved the entire week 100% more than I anticipated. I am much more confident in my skills. Lots of fun and laughs along the way.”
