RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Course

Client:     Experienced Skippers, wanting to increase their knowledge and skills

Dates:   to be determined – due to covid restrictions.

Info:        Five days live-aboard in beautiful Nova Scotia.

The RYA Coastal Skipper course consists of advanced skippering techniques for yachtsmen and women with considerable knowledge of sailing and navigation, wanting to undertake coastal passages by day and night.  This course is a significant step toward attaining RYA/MCA Yachtmaster certification.

Like the Day Skipper course, this course consists of skippered passages in a variety of situations. Each trainee will skipper more challenging passages and learn more about passage planning, pilotage by day and night, boat handling, safety and emergency situations.

It is an intensive but satisfying week, with candidates often working towards a Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence.

Completing the Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore shorebased course beforehand would be a definite asset.

Coastal Skippers should be able to undertake more difficult passages by day and night and handle the yacht in more demanding conditions. By the end of the course you should have the knowledge, if not the experience, to become a Yachtmaster.

Duration 5 days, 4 nights

Material provided  The Complete Yachtmaster: Sailing, Seamanship and Navigation for the Modern Yacht Skipper by Tom Cunliffe

Student:Instructor Ratio 3 single or 2 couples

During the course, we cover the following topics in depth:

  1. Passage planning
  2. Preparation for sea
  3. Pilotage
  4. Passage making and ability as skipper
  5. Yacht handling under power
  6. Yacht handling under sail
  7. Adverse weather conditions
  8. Emergency situations

As a minimum, we like to see about 15 days or more, 300 miles.  Eight or more night hours aboard a sailing yacht would be a benefit.

On successful completion of your RYA Coastal Skipper course your name, contact details, date of birth, certificate number and date of issue will shared with the RYA through a secure web portal on www.rya.org.uk. “Dave is the ideal sailing instructor. With years of hands on experience in all types of climates and conditions, Dave readily shares his knowledge with his student, in a meaningful way that encourages learning – focusing on memory retention. Dave is a delightful person to be around – he is genuine, personable and has a lively sense of humour. We felt completely at home on Michaela, which is the ideal learning environment. I would highly recommend Dave for advanced sailing instruction that covers the diverse aspects of sailing in depth. Dave is a great instructor and a wonderful person! ”
